What each class needs, and where the money is on a fleet scope.
Class A Coaches
The largest roof area on the road and the most equipment sitting on it — two or three rooftop AC units, vents, fans, satellite and antenna mounts, solar, and on newer coaches a substantial array of solar mounting feet that were all drilled through the deck after the unit left the factory.
The full-height front cap is the other defining feature. At highway speed it takes the entire wind-driven water load of the vehicle, and the joint where it meets the roof is a compound curve between dissimilar materials.
Basement bays add real scope: pass-through storage, the wet bay, and the generator compartment all channel water in through door tops if the seals are aged.
Spec: Alasta Seal 60 mil roof deck, 80 mil at all flanges and the cap transition, 30–40 mil in bay interiors and door frames. Roughly 12–14 gal field material for a 340 sq ft roof plus detail build.
Class C & the Cab-Over
Every Class C has the same weak point: the joint where the coach-built cab-over meets a factory chassis cab. Two manufacturers, two materials, and a structure that flexes differently on each side of the joint.
It is also the single worst place on the vehicle for a leak, because directly below it is the bunk — usually a plywood platform with a mattress on it, which means water sits there absorbed and undetected for a long time before anyone notices.
Treat the cab-over nose as a detail, not as part of the field. Remove the trim, remove the sealant, prime both substrates, and build the membrane heavy across the full transition.
Spec: 80 mil across the cab-over joint feathered 8 in. onto both surfaces, 60 mil on the roof deck, 80 mil at vent and AC flanges.
Fifth Wheels & Toy Haulers
Fifth wheels have a two-level roof with a transition between them, and that step frequently ponds. They also carry the most road spray exposure of any towable on the front cap and pin-box area — you are towing directly behind a set of dually tires throwing water and, in winter, brine.
Toy haulers add the ramp door header and the garage roof section. The rear wall of a toy hauler works harder than any other panel on any towable, and its seams show it.
Multiple slides mean multiple topper rails, which is the most-moving detail on the unit and the one most likely to be the actual source when a fifth wheel leaks.
Spec: 60 mil roof deck both levels, 80 mil at the level transition and both caps, 60 mil on every slide rail and header, 40 mil on the pin-box area and front cap lower.
Chassis, Underbelly & Wet Bays
The half of the unit nobody photographs. Frame rails, outriggers, and crossmembers take constant road spray, and in the salt states they take brine that is far more aggressive than rock salt ever was.
The wet bay is its own problem — it is wet by design, it houses fittings that occasionally weep, and the floor above it is the same plywood-and-laminate assembly as the rest of the unit.
Coating the frame stops the corrosion that eventually shows up as an outrigger weld failure. Coating the wet bay and utility compartment floors keeps the water where it belongs.
Spec: Alasta Seal 40 mil on frame rails, outriggers, and underbelly with 7001 primer over galvanized or previously coated steel; 30–40 mil on wet bay and compartment floors and walls.
Additional Scope Items
- Awning rails and mounting rails — through-bolted into the sidewall, loaded in wind, and rarely resealed
- Ladder and rack attachment points — every one is a set of holes in a load-bearing panel
- Solar panel mounting feet — the most common recently-added roof penetration on any coach
- Satellite domes and antenna bases — often relocated at least once, leaving abandoned holes
- Skylights and roof hatch curbs — sealed to the curb, never to the plastic dome
- Refrigerator and furnace roof vents — same flange failure as a fan vent, less frequently inspected
- Generator compartment — heat, vibration, and exhaust all working on the same seals
- Rear cap and ladder-side seams — the corner that takes the most stone chipping on a towable
